What is Somatic Therapy and how does it work?
If you’ve ever felt like talking about your problems helps… but only to a point, you’re not alone.
Many people come to therapy with a sense that something is still stuck. You might understand your patterns, know where they come from, and yet your body still reacts—tight chest, racing thoughts, shutdown, overwhelm.
This is where somatic therapy comes in.
Somatic therapy is a body-based approach to healing. Instead of focusing only on thoughts and emotions, it gently brings attention to what’s happening in your body—your breath, sensations, posture, and nervous system responses.
Why does this matter?
Because trauma, stress, and emotional experiences are not just stored in the mind—they are held in the body. When something feels overwhelming or unsafe, your nervous system adapts to protect you. Over time, these patterns can become automatic.
You might notice this as:
feeling anxious for no clear reason
shutting down in certain situations
being constantly “on edge”
struggling to relax, even when things are okay
In somatic therapy, we slow things down. We don’t push or force. Instead, we create a sense of safety first, and from there, we begin to notice and gently shift these patterns.
This might include:
bringing awareness to your breath
noticing physical sensations without judgment
learning how your body signals stress or safety
building capacity to stay present with difficult emotions
The goal isn’t to “fix” you—it’s to help your nervous system feel safe enough to come out of survival mode.
Over time, many people notice they feel more grounded, more connected to themselves, and less reactive to stress.
If you’ve felt like traditional talk therapy hasn’t fully reached the root of what you’re experiencing, somatic therapy might offer a different and supportive path.
